Lloyds Metals & Energy Ltd. (LMEL) was incorporated in 1977 as a steel manufacturing company. In 1994 the Company commissioned the 1 st part of the Ghugus Unit (Unit 1) and began production, with an annual capacity of 150000 MT. In 2007 they further added to this capacity, strengthening the annual capacity to 270000 MT Along with this they also added a Captive Power Plant (CPP) of 30 MW capacity.
LMEL was awarded a lease for iron ore mines in 2007 at Surjagarh Village, Gadchiroli district, initially for a period of 20 years & extended to 50 years under MMDR Act, 2018. This district has Maharashtra’s richest iron ore reserves. The overall iron ore reserves in the allocated mines were estimated by the Maharashtra Government’s Directorate of Geology and Mining to be 90 Mn tonnes (estimated in the 1980s), of which 73.6 Mn tonnes are proven. The extraction capacity of iron ore from the mines as of FY22 is at 3 MMTPA.
Lloyds Metals is also in the process of completing the construction of a DRI Plant in Konsari, Gadchiroli district with a capacity of 72,000 MTPA. As of FY 2023, the Company has commenced mobilization of all the necessary equipment and machinery to mine the enhanced capacity, it has been awarded an increased capacity from 3MTPA to 10MTPA.
